It is easier said than done. When it comes to losing weight, the efforts always fall short. Most of the people who do not find success for a month or two give it up. How good it would be if you could have something that could expedite your weight loss and help with your weight loss efforts?
Well, there are a lot of foods that can help in weight loss, but experts prefer juices over solid foods, as juices can be easily absorbed by body and contain ample vitamins, minerals, and all other vital nutrients. Today, I let you know top 5 juices that help you lose weight quickly!

I, particularly, love its color which also lets you know the richness of antioxidants in this fruit (juice). Blueberry juice is one of the richest in antioxidants. 10 Essential Food and Fitness Habits

1- Cravings are not always psychological - Sometimes we crave things because our body wants a certain nutrient. Take for example a sugar craving, it is probably your body asking for some fruit as it knows on a deep level that it is full of vitamins and minerals. Cravings can also be down to faulty eating habits – Like being programmed to want dessert after dinner every night, this is up to you to break and choose a better option.
2- Exercising cannot make up for bad eating - You cannot out run or out exercise a bad diet. Something you can eat in 5 bites could have enough calories to take a 40 minute run to burn off….. The video below sais it all.
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQbuzsY_34Q
3- We need calories - Dieting for any prolonged period can take its toll on your body, hair gets dry, mood plummets, we feel cold, sex drive disappears and we just feel bad. The truth is we need sufficient calories to function, basically we need enough food. This will keep our metabolism high and our hormones flowing. I highly recommend this free e-book if you have struggled with adopting this mindset and need more information on amping up your diet.
4- Looking and feeling good is mainly nutrition - Well at least 70-80% nutrition the rest comes from keeping active and having a healthy social life. Poor nutrition can make us feel terrible, the problem is sometimes we do not realise how bad we feel until we start to feel better. Good solid nutrition is the linchpin on which you should base your health…..
5- Strength training is essential - A solid strength training workout every couple of days is enough to capture the benefits. This could be a body weight circuit, plyometricsor some weight training in the gym, it is up to you. Stretching should be the foundation with additional strength training to supplement, stretching can go a long way to improve protein synthesis as well as depleting muscle glycogen and getting rid of fat stores. This combination will increase your metabolism and improve your bone density, plus you will look a lot better…..
6- Movement is essential - The healthiest people are those who move, this doesn’t have to mean sport and regular “exercise” but just moving. Things likewalkingbiking around or gardening, anything that will get you up and about which will signal your body that you are a healthy active person…..
7- Food is best unprocessed and in its natural state - Think wholefoodsrather than a specific style of eating. So long as what you eat is unprocessed and in its original form you cannot go far wrong. Eat more fresh and local produce when you can…..
8- From time to time break the rules - We cannot stick to a perfect diet all the time. In fact it is good to sway from eating “healthy” every now and then firstly for our sanity and secondly because it can also work in boosting leptin and keeping your metabolism healthy. So sometimes just eat whatever you like…..
9- Spend time with people you like - Health and Fitness is not all eating healthy and working out, having a good social life is also hugely important. Surround yourself with people who you like and feel comfortable around.
A good friend is a connection to life – a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world. - Lois Wys
This also counts with family, the stronger the social support network you have the better. This does not always mean quantity, usually it is better to have 1-2 close friends than a pool of distant one’s……
10- Listen to your body - With age I think we all eventually learn to listen to our bodies. You will probably start to pickup on little things that make you feel better, whether it is eating a certain type of food, getting 7 hours sleep or working out at a specific time of day. Just be patient and try to read your bodies signals of what feels right.

The Diet Detective: 8 Healthy Habits to Improve Your Lifestyle

Here are a few trends to watch out for and, a few hints to help you create a healthier you.

BODY WEIGHT WORK

Trend: According to the American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) worldwide survey, one fitness trend will be body weight training, which includes "back-to-basics" exercises like push-ups, planks, pull-ups, squats and other exercises that use the body as resistance.
Why It Matters: It reduces injuries because you're using only your own body weight, not heavy weights, and you don't have to go to a fitness center, you can do most exercises at home. Fit Tip:Check out the following to get started:

EXERCISE AS YOU AGE

Trend: The ACSM also believes that another trend will be an increase in functional fitness for older adults.
Why It Matters: There is significant research to show that engaging in strength and functional training activities can strengthen bones, reduce joint pain and reduce injuries from slips and falls.
Fit Tip: If you can afford it (or if you want to give a gift to a relative), hire a qualified certified personal trainer. Make sure to find one who has lots of experience with older adults, has insurance and is certified by ACSM or the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Trend:
According to the National Restaurant Association, more than 7/10 consumers say they are trying to eat better at restaurants vs. how they ate two years ago. Additionally, 3/4 of consumers say healthy menu options are an important factor when choosing a restaurant

.EATING HEALTHFULLY WHILE DINING OUT

Other findings reported by the NRA's survey are an increasing interest in children's nutrition (including whole-grain foods) and in local sourcing, which also includes "hyper-local" sourcing, such as restaurant gardens.
Why It Matters: We eat out a lot nearly half the time, in fact. And most high-calorie foods are consumed when eating away from the home. It's also wonderful to know that restaurants are catching on and will be delivering healthier, fresher foods. I love the idea of a restaurant having its own garden—nice touch.
Fit Tips:
  • Say no to mayo, tartar sauce, creamy dressings and extra cheese.
  • Use mustard, ketchup, salt, pepper or vinegar as fat-free ways to season your food.
  • In salads, watch the nuts, croutons and other add-ons.
  • Look for foods that are grilled or broiled, NOT breaded or deep-fried.
  • Instead of cheese (100 calories per 1-ounce slice for lettuce, tomato and onion.

4 Healthy Habits to Improve Your Life

LeeAnne Hebert is a Health and Fitness Coach that works with people to move past what’s holding them back from reaching their goals.
She and her husband, Mark, who has 20 years of fitness training under his belt, are prime examples of what it means to live well 360 (in every way).
So we asked LeeAnne to share some of her tips with our Live Well 360 community about how she manages a busy schedule PLUS finds time to take good care of her body.
She put together 4 tips on how she has incorporates healthy living into her daily life.
Guest post by LeeAnne Hebert
Three years ago I was at my heaviest weight and feeling pretty bad about myself. The knowledge I share with my clients/readers today is mainly based on my personal experiences and what has helped me lose that 15-20 lbs and keep it off.
4 Healthy Habits to Improve Your Life
As a Health and Fitness Coach, one thing I’ve found that 97% of us truly have in common and struggle with is time, AND that the only thing we make time for is work because we “have” to.
We get up at a certain time, to get there on time, put in our time, and then leave on time (well, most of us).
How many of us don’t have/make time to work out, plan or do any other thing to help us stay fit and healthy enough to enjoy a quality life – because really, isn’t living a quality life what makes life worth living?
That’s where I come in… There are things that each of us can do to save time and to keep our fitness plans on track – flying by the seat of your pants just doesn’t work, we all need to PLAN.

1. Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time

Each week I create a plan that includes meals, workouts and time to do things for myself.
My meal plan may looks like this:
Monday
  • Breakfast – egg whites and oatmeal
  • AM snack – green smoothie
  • Lunch – shrimp, salad and brown rice
  • PM snack – almonds and raisins
  • Dinner – Salmon, green beans and sweet potato
Shopping List
  • Egg whites
  • Oatmeal
  • Spinach
  • Frozen Blueberries
  • Almonds
  • Raisins
  • Shrimp
  • Lettuce
  • Carrots
  • Brown Rice
  • Salmon
  • Green Beans
  • Sweet Potato
As you can see, I then use my meal plan to create my shopping list. This is how I ensure I have everything I need to create the meals I’ve planned.
Have you ever heard the saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”?
It’s so true – by planning your meals and having all the items on hand to create those meals you have set yourself up to succeed.

2. Pre-portion Your Serving Sizes

Another important time and calorie saver for me is prep and portion control. Each week after I food shop, I weigh and separate my beef, fish and chicken, put them in individual baggies and freeze them.
Why?
For one, because portion control is a great way to cut out extra calories.
And two, because now each morning during the week all I have to do is look to see what I’ve planned for dinner, take it out of the freezer and put it in the refrigerator to defrost while I’m at work.
Then when I get home I already know what I’m going to make, it’s defrosted in the right portion and I have a healthy well balanced meal that only takes about 15 minutes to make because… I took out the thought process and pain of:
  • What am I going to have for dinner?
  • Do I have anything in the house?
  • Do I have to defrost it?
  • What should I to do with the extra? (Since it wasn’t separated, we know the leftovers will probably end up in the trash.)
No wonder so many people throw their hands up and just order a pizza. I’ve been there and done that, personally I’d rather end my day by being prepared – wouldn’t you?

3. Plan Your Fitness Like Any VIP Appointment

The next big thing for me is planning my exercise, which may look like this:
  • Monday – 3 mile walk at 7 AM after the kids get on the bus
  • Tuesday / Thursday – appointment with personal trainer at noon
  • Wednesday – Cardio Tennis with the girls at 7 PM
  • Saturday – Walk with the family after dinner
If you notice the above information is very specific. This is me committing to working out 5 times a week on certain day, at certain times.
The more specific you are the more likely you are to follow your plan. Also reviewing / revising your plan vs. just recycling it is just as important because every week may not be the same.
For instance – If I had Dr.’s appointment on Monday morning I wouldn’t make my 7:00 a.m. walk would I?
My point is this: you need to set realistic appointments with yourself, ones that you can and will keep, and you need to make yourself enough of a priority to keep those appointments.
You wouldn’t blow off an important client meeting or an appointment with a friend would you?
All of my above plans are very doable and are actually things I enjoy, which brings me to scheduling time for you…

4. Make Time to Re-energize a Priority

Making time to recharge your batteries is crucial to your health and fitness goals. In fact I just read that stress may be the number one weight loss inhibitor.
This I believe is 100% true and here is why – over the last few months I have had more than one of my friends tell me they have lost weight on vacation and not because they were depriving themselves of all that vacations entail.
Here is why I believe this happens… Life is stressful, stress causes the production of the hormone cortisol, which stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, along with stimulating insulin release.
Fact: You can’t break down fat when the body is under the influence of insulin.
So wouldn’t it make sense that being on a relaxing vacation or that by taking time to recharge your batteries and reduce your daily stress you are – one – improving your quality of life and – two – allowing your body the relief it needs to work its magic.
Making a plan and consistently following that plan is what is going to help you reach your health and fitness goals.
I do understand that being consistent is probably one of the hardest things to do, because life happens – but if you make a plan, and are able to follow that plan 80 – 90% of the time, just think how much more ahead of the game you will be.
As I mentioned earlier I’ve been doing this for 3 years now and for 3 years I’ve been able to keep that extra 15 -20 lbs off – coincidence? I think not.

Antioxidants: The 13 Healthiest Foods

In her just-released book,The O2 Diet,weight-loss expert and WH contributor Keri Glassman, R.D., reveals the powerful benefits of eating foods that are packed with antioxidants.
When it comes to eating healthy and losing weight, we've been focusing on the wrong set of numbers, says nutritionist Keri Glassman, R.D. This month, Glassman launches a revolutionary way of eating in her new book,The O2 Diet, which is based on the foods that have the highest antioxidant activity levels. This plan will make it super-simple for you to shed pounds, look fabulous, boost your energy, and amp up your brainpower.
Glassman's plan is based on the ORAC scale—a scientific value that represents the antioxidant levels of foods. (ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity.) Using this scale, she has devised a diet that gets you 30,000 ORAC points a day—10 times the current recommended level of 3,000. It's those mega ORAC points that scoop up free radicals, the damaging rogue elements in our bodies that contribute to everything from wrinkles and brain fog to cancer and heart disease.
And you can say good-bye to calorie counting: By focusing on high ORAC scores, you'll chow down on foods that are healthy and have the right proportion of nutrients, so the extra weight will come off more easily.
In her book, Glassman explains how certain high-ORAC fruits and vegetables have specific powers. Load up on these antioxidant superstars every time you hit the grocery store—they'll help you bring out your healthy best in these five ways.
1 LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT TRYING
On the O2 Diet, estimate that you'll lose about two to three pounds a week. But instead of worrying about the pounds, focus on ORAC points—and the pounds will melt away. These are just three of the O2 Diet's weight-loss wonders:
ARTICHOKES: At only 60 calories each, they're a calorie bargain. Artichokes are also super-high on the ORAC scale—7,900 points—and they contain phytochemicals that may lower cholesterol levels.
LEMON WATER: Lemon peel contains pectin, a soluble fiber that has been shown to help with weight loss. Add an ounce of lemon juice and some zest to each of your eight daily glasses of water (which will help you feel fuller), and you'll add 3,200 ORAC points.
RED GRAPEFRUIT: One study found that people who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds over 12 weeks, while those who drank grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds. The red variety has more of the cancer-protecting antioxidant lycopene. Half a grape-fruit has 1,900 ORAC points.
2 MAKE YOUR SKIN GLOW
While no food can turn back the clock, some can perk up your looks and slow the aging process.
FIGS: Eating a handful of dried figs increases the amount of antioxidants in your blood for four hours, much longer than many other foods. Two small figs have about 2,700 ORAC points.
RED BELL PEPPERS: The unique combination of large amounts of vitamins A, C, and E make red bell peppers a skin superfood. Half a cup adds 600 ORAC points.
WATERMELON: This lycopene-rich fruit provides 33 percent more protection against sunburn than other fruits. (You still have to wear sunscreen though!) One cup of this diced melon has 200 ORAC points.
3 BOLSTER YOUR  BODY
Certain antioxidants have been shown to fight cancer, boost immunity, and keep bones strong.
BEANS: They're loaded with phytochemicals (including saponins, protease inhibitors, and phytic acid), which may protect cells from damage that potentially causes cancer, reports the American Institute for Cancer Research. Half a cup has 7,800 ORAC points.
PRUNES: These wrinkly little dried fruits are rich in vitamin K and a top source of the mineral boron, and we need both for strong bones. A three-prune serving gives you 1,900 ORAC points.
4 WARD OFF HEART DISEASE
Young women tend to be oblivious to heart disease, but that attitude itself is a big risk. How you eat today helps predict how healthy your heart will be 30 years from now.
CHERRIES: Researchers at the University of Michigan have found that the anthocyanins in dark cherries reduce belly fat and lower cholesterol and blood sugar; one serving packs 3,500 ORAC points.
DARK CHOCOLATE: Rich in flavonoids, chocolate is believed to promote heart health by reducing platelet activation, affecting the relaxation capabilities of blood vessels. One ounce of dark chocolate has 5,900 ORAC points.
5 BOOST YOUR BRAINPOWER
The neural pathways in our brains are growing and improving all the time. Eat the right foods and you'll be able to concentrate better, remember more, and feel calmer.
BLUEBERRIES: They may improve memory, cognition, and balance. Researchers believe that blueberries (9,700 ORAC points per one-cup serving) reduce inflammation and can help us overcome the normal effects of brain aging.
CINNAMON: Researchers believe that cinnamon may inhibit certain Alzheimer's disease cells. One teaspoon of cinnamon adds 7,000 ORAC points.
PLUMS: These juicy treats decrease anxiety-related behaviors, and researchers think they may protect against depression. One plum adds 4,100 ORAC points to a meal.

How To Boost Your Energy

undefined

11 April 2013

Everyone’s familiar with low energy levels which can cause us to feel fatigued, mentally foggy or irritable. It’s no surprise that we all tend to go through that lull in the middle of the day where regaining even a smidgen of energy seems impossible. Getting a quick energy fix can be really simple by making a few changes to your daily routine. We share five ways to increase your energy and recommend five of our best energy boosting holidays.

Eat breakfast

The importance of eating breakfast is expressed repeatedly. Skipping breakfast in the morning can cause loss of concentration, tiredness and dizziness later in the day. Ensuring you have a healthy breakfast will increase your energy and prevent you from reaching for a sugary snack, which can later cause an energy crash. Complex carbohydrates release glucose slowly and will subsequently keep you fuller for longer and continue to steadily provide you with energy. A major source of complex carbohydrates is whole grain foods; so try whole grain cereals with skimmed milk, dried fruits or whole-wheat toast.

Get some sunshine

Step outdoors for 10 minutes for a fast energy fix. Sunlight provides your skin with vitamin D, which can help improve mood and intellectual performance, as well as leave you feeling energized  Moreover, research from experts at the University of Michigan found that a walk outside in the open air helps improve conditions such as memory deficit, inattentiveness and other forms of mental fatigue.

Sun Salutation to provide your skin with essential vitamin D

energized

Make a smoothie

Juices or smoothies are a quick and convenient way of boosting your energy levels. Every type of fruit contains natural sugars and fibers  Fruits supercharged with vitamin C, such as oranges and kiwis, and fruits rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, will sharpen your focus and provide more mental clarity throughout your day.

Move about

Going for a brisk walk for just 10 minutes can help fight the feelings of fatigue and increase your energy for up to 2 hours. Even if you only have time for a stretch, walk around the office, or a few runs up and down the stairs, you could feel much more revived. Energy levels tend to be at their lowest around lunchtime, so try to squeeze in any short burst of exercise during your lunch break. Furthermore, if you are working on a computer for most of the day, take moments to look away from the screen as this can put a lot of strain on your eyes, causing you to feel tired and lethargic.

Stay hydrated

Dehydration is a primary contributor to sapping energy levels and causing you to feel fatigued. Drinking plenty of fluids, particularly water, will assist in suppressing lethargy. Foods with high water content will also keep you hydrated. However, be careful of drinking too much caffeine. Over the course of the day it can have the opposite effect of the energy burst most people think it will give them. Green tea is a much healthier option, with lower caffeine levels than black tea and coffee and it also contains the amino acid L-theanine, known for aiding alertness and memory. More importantly, remember to avoid stimulants such as energy drinks or supplements as, although they may give you a short term energy fix, they are not a long term solution!

Is juicing healthier than eating whole fruits or vegetables?

Answer

from Jennifer K. Nelson, R.D., L.D.
Juicing probably is not any healthier than eating whole fruits and vegetables. Juicing extracts the juice from fresh fruits or vegetables. The resulting liquid contains most of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) found in the whole fruit. However, whole fruits and vegetables also have healthy fiber, which is lost during most juicing.
Proponents say that juicing is better for you than is eating whole fruits and vegetables because your body can absorb the nutrients better and it gives your digestive system a rest from working on fiber. They say that juicing can reduce your risk of cancer, boost your immune system, help you remove toxins from your body, aid digestion, and help you lose weight.
But there's no sound scientific evidence that extracted juices are healthier than the juice you get by eating the fruit or vegetable itself. On the other hand, if you don't enjoy eating fresh fruits and vegetables, juicing may be a fun way to add them to your diet or to try fruits and vegetables you normally wouldn't eat. You can find many juicing recipes online or mix up your own combinations of fruits and vegetables to suit your taste.
If you do try juicing, make only as much juice as you can drink at one time because fresh squeezed juice can quickly develop harmful bacteria. And when juicing, try to keep some of the pulp. Not only does it have healthy fiber, but it can help fill you up. If you buy commercially produced fresh juice from a juicing stand or store, select a pasteurized product. Note that juices from some fruits and vegetables can contain more sugar than you might realize, and this can add unwanted calories and lead to weight gain.

Juicing: How Healthy Is It?

Juicing is popular. But before you give it a whirl, you might want to know what it may -- and may not -- do for your health.
What are the nutritional benefits and drawbacks? Can you juice for weight loss? What about food safety and claims about cleansing your system? Here's what you need to know.

Pros and Cons

Jennifer Barr, a Wilmington, Del., dietitian, occasionally makes fresh juice as a snack for her kids. Her favorite juice combines kale, carrots, ginger, parsley, and apples. She then adds the leftover pulp from her juicing machine into muffins.
“If you’re not big into fruits and vegetables, it’s a good way to get them in. It can help you meet daily recommendations in one drink” and be part of a healthy diet, says Barr, MPH, RD, LDN, who works at Wilmington's Center for Community Health at Christiana Care Health System.
But you shouldn't count on juicing as your sole source of fruits and vegetables.
"Don’t think because you’re juicing that you’re off the hook with eating fruits and vegetables,” says Manuel Villacorta, MS, RD, CSSD, an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesman and founder of Eating Free, a weight management program.
Aim to eat two whole fruits, and three to four vegetables a day. They should come in different colors, as the colors have different vitamins and minerals, Barr says.

What's Left Out

A juicing machine extracts the juice from whole fruits or vegetables. The processing results in fewer vitamins and minerals, because the nutrient-rich skin is left behind. Juicing also removes the pulp, which contains fiber.
You can add some of the leftover pulp back into the juice or use it in cooking.
Besides muffins, Barr uses other combinations -- such as spinach, pears, flaxseed, celery, and kale -- to make broth for cooking soup, rice, and pasta. She calls it "going the extra step to fortify your meals."
Juicers can be expensive, ranging from $50 to $400. Some more expensive juicers will break down a lot of the fruit by grinding the core, rind, and seeds, Barr says.
You may not need a juicing machine to make juice. You can use a blender for most whole fruits or vegetables to keep the fiber -- add water if it becomes too thick, Villacorta says.
You’ll also want to remove seeds and rinds, and some skins.

12 Reasons You’re Not Losing Fat

1) You’re Eating Toabs purple 12 Reasons Youre Not Losing Fato Many Carbs

This should be pretty obvious to most people by now, but there are still the old die-hards out there who swear that everyone should be consuming two grams of carbs per pound of bodyweight every day while maintaining a low fat intake.
Load up on whole grains and fruit while cutting down on healthy, essential sources of fat like grass fed beef they’ll tell you.
Anyone experienced in physique transformation knows this is nonsense.
Most average people have a terrible tolerance for carbs, shitty insulin sensitivity and simply don’t do enough physically demanding work to warrant too many carbs.
If you want to get lean cutting carbs is usually one of the first and most important steps you need to take. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t or can’t have any but you need to make smart choices and they need to be taken in at the right times and cycled properly.
The more training you do and the leaner you are the more carbs you can tolerate. If you have a lot of fat to lose, however, cutting them would be a very important first step to take.

2) You’re Eating Carbs at the Wrong Time

If you’re above 15% bodyfat you need to limit carbs somewhat. In that case I would only recommend a serving or two of fruit each day, vegetables and 50-100 grams of starchy carbs from potatoes or rice with your nightly meal or post workout. Another option is to go three days with no starchy carbs then load up on day four. When you get down to 15% you can increase the amount of carbs at dinner or in your refeed day.
Everyone else should limit carb consumption to post workout and night time, as per The Renegade Diet rules rules. During the day you want to be alert and focused, which is one reason why you don’t want to be pounding down starchy carbs during this time. Save for them for the night time when you want to optimize serotonin production and rest, relax and repair.

3) You’re Eating Too Much Fat

Some people cut carbs and assume that they’re good to go and there’s nothing else to worry about. Unfortunately, the low/no carb diet isn’t as much fun as Dr. Atkins made it out to be.
You can’t just eat pounds of bacon and mayonnaise with reckless abandon and think that you’ll magically end up ripped.
Fat contains calories; nine per gram to be exact. At the end of the day total calories still matter, and if you’re eating more than you burn you’re never going to get ripped.
Please don’t mistake this as my advocating a low fat diet. That’s just as bad, if not worse, than eating too much fat.
A minimum of 20% of your calories should come from healthy fats like pastured egg yolks, wild caught salmon, grass fed beef and coconut oil to ensure optimal health. Just be careful about going overboard with it and thinking that low carbs automatically leads to single digit body-fat.
You still need to keep a handle on things like total calories.

4)You’re Not Eating Enough Protein

protein food 300x203 12 Reasons Youre Not Losing FatIn my experience it’s usually only females who are guilty of this but guys can make this mistake on occasion as well. The average female who can’t lose body-fat usually eats a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast with an egg.
One… single… egg.
Then she’ll have a sandwich for lunch with two ounces of lean turkey.
For dinner it will be a salad with low fat dressing and four ounces of chicken or fish.
Although, in all honesty they may skip the protein all together and just have a salad for either lunch or dinner. Let’s assume she weighs 135 pounds. Most experts would agree that she would need to consume at least 100 grams of protein per day, if not a gram per pound, which would equal 135 grams.
Each ounce of protein is around 6-7 grams of protein. So in this example she had 36-40 or so grams combined with lunch and dinner plus the six grams from the egg. So that’s a total of 42 grams, which falls just a wee bit shy of where she needs to be.
Females often freak out when you tell them to eat more than six ounces of protein at a sitting but when you break down the numbers for them and reveal just how many calories they’re eating it should make more sense.
People who eat a sufficient amount of protein usually end up having an easier time getting ripped than those who don’t. Make sure you’re getting enough.

5) You’re Drinking Too Many Protein Shakes

When you want to get ripped it’s always better to chew as many of your calories as possible. The very act of chewing and digesting solid food burns more calories than drinking shakes does. Most physique competitors cut out shakes when getting ready for a show. Take note and learn the lesson. One after a workout is okay but I wouldn’t be slugging down three a day.

6) You’re Eating Nuts

I love nuts. I mean, who doesn’t? Give me a bag of pistachios or cashews and I won’t look up till the whole thing’s gone.
The problem is nuts have a ton of calories. When you’re dieting for fat loss the rules are usually the opposite of those followed by skinny hardgainers trying to gain size.
Those guys want the most calorically dense foods possible. Fat loss dieters do not.
You’re better off filling up on nutritionally dense foods that don’t pack a lot of calories, like green vegetables. If you’re dieting you need to limit your nut consumption to about ten almonds per serving.
Not too many people can eat ten almonds. Most people eat ten handfuls. If you are strictly tracking and calculating everything all day and you want to load up on nuts at certain times I suppose you could but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Nuts can be very problematic for a lot of people, especially those with digestive or auto immune issues. As Paleo Solution author Robb Wolf has noted, nuts should be used the same way you use condiments- sparingly.
I should also add, and this is strictly my opinion, meaning it has NOT been proven and posted on Pubmed… nut butters seem to be easier for most people to digest than actual whole nuts. Just something to consider.

7) You’re Eating Too Much Fruit

jolie berry 300x224 12 Reasons Youre Not Losing Fat“What?! You’re telling people not to eat fruit!? Everyone knows that it’s impossible to get fat from eating too much fruit!”
Yeah, yeah I know, that’s why physique competitors eat so much fruit and why all fat loss experts who specialize in getting people shredded recommend such high quantities of it.
In our hunter gatherer days fruit was nothing like what you see in the supermarket today. Berries were small, dark and bitter; not the huge sugar sacks most people consume these days.
Don’t get me wrong, fruit is healthy and can be eaten by lean individuals in limited amounts but any type of excessive fructose (a sugar found in fruit) consumption will lead to fat gain.
Fructose can only be processed by the liver and once liver glycogen stores are full the excess gets converted to triglycerides and stored as body-fat. If you want to get ripped cut fruit completely for a while or limit it to two or three servings per day. Just be sure to really up the vegetable consumption so you can keep your vital nutrient uptake where it needs to be.

8) You’re Not Training Heavy

When you want to lose body-fat the first inclination is often to crank up the reps and cut the rest periods. I actually have no problem with fairly low rest periods.
But not if you’re used to resting three minutes between sets and all of the sudden cut them down to thirty seconds because you decided it was time to get shredded you’ll be in trouble.
That never works. All that happens is your weights start plummeting on every exercise and you get weaker and smaller. High reps have the same effect.
When dieting, the primary role of strength training is to maintain muscle mass.
That is the single most important thing. Don’t use it as your primary “fat burning” activity… UNLESS you are seriously overweight. If you need to lose more than fifty pounds or so that would probably be fine (although please don’t ever do any of the bullshit you see on those fat camp TV shows).
A female can actually get something out of metcon workouts in the right situation as well. The caveat, however, is that that she needs to be strong and actually have some muscle mass. If you take a weak female with no muscle and give her a silly metcon circuit she won’t usually get much out of it because she’s too weak to produce enough force.
Females should get strong first before they attempt that type of training.
If you’re a guy and are trying to lose 10-20 pounds of body-fat without losing all your muscle mass in the process you should use strength training as a way to maintain size and strength; nothing more, nothing less. So the same principles that helped you get big and strong apply when dieting. Keep the reps in the low to moderate range and the resistance high.

9) You’re Overdoing Cardio

Traditional forms of cardio are largely useless for fat loss.
But useless is even okay, it’s when it starts to be counterproductive that we have a real problem. Excessive amounts of cardio lead to an overproduction of cortisol which leads to more abdominal fat and numerous health problems. If you want to do cardio that won’t actually hurt you and could do you some good, go for a long walk.
No self respecting man should ever be spotted on an elliptical machine.

10) You’re Not Running Sprints or Doing Sled Work

Dieting is the most important thing for fat loss.
After that you should be doing some form of strength training to maintain your muscle mass. When you have those to things dialed in you’ll want to add in some type of sprinting or sled work. There is nothing more effective for fat loss.
See all wide receivers, defensive backs, sprinters, soccer players, etc. for proof. Two or three 20-40 minute sprint or sled sessions per week will be enough for most people.

11) You’re Not Managing Stress Properly

When you get stressed out your body produces a hormone known as cortisol. This increases bodyfat storage if it’s not controlled. Most people are stressed out all day long which means their cortisol levels are always high. That leads to an increase in bodyfat even if your diet and training are perfect. So make sure to take the time to de-stress, mediate, laugh, do something fun and try not to take things so seriously. Stress management is overlooked key in fat loss.

12) You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep

When you’re short on sleep your insulin sensitivity decreases and your cortisol goes up. Both things lead to less than optimal fat loss.
You also miss out on the critically important Growth Hormone boost that comes each night during deep sleep. If you want to lose more fat you have to get more sleep. Most people will ignore this and some of you are probably reading this at 2am. Unfortunately this just might be the most important thing on the whole list.
More sleep improves EVERYTHING. Make it a priority.
