Yoga for weight loss

Is using yoga for weight loss the best way to lose weight? Well that depends on the person, the style of yoga we are talking about and other environmental factors that may be present.
First we must understand what it means to lose weight. For most of us it means to lose fat.
How does our body lose fat? This is what we need to understand if we are going to be successful in loosing weight.
In reality there is ONLY ONE WAY to lose weight (fat), you must use more calories then you take in. With ALL the products and marketing out there it all comes down to that one statement.
This is why diets do not really work, Yes you do need to watch what you eat, but not eating is worse for you then eating to much. We need to have a balanced diet that gives us the nutrition we need and also keeps the calories to a manageable level. For more information on that visit my Yoga Diet page
However sometimes there are things that influence how much weight we can lose, and how effective our weight loss program can be. Let us talk about a few of the things that can inhibit your Yoga for weight loss program.

Stress is a common factor in people who have the extra pounds. When we are stressed our metabolism suffers and because of that we retain more calories and calories retained become fat. there will be many posts on this site that will deal with stress and stress reduction. Just be aware that the more stress you have the harder to lose the weight. So be kind t yourself and one piece of good news is regular exercise has been proven to reduce stress. When you use yoga for weight loss it also helps reduce our stress.
The level or intensity of our training will also affect how much weight comes off. If you are like me you like to work out very hard and push yourself to your limits and then past them. However this is NOT the best strategy to loosing weight. For me the hardest part of my training for weight loss was not getting to the gym, but making sure I did not work out too hard. For some of you this will be great news since you do not want to work out hard anyways *SMILE*. More on this will be added on a separate page detailing my program. When we use yoga for weight loss, it fits perfectly with this philosophy, since yoga is a more balanced form of exercise. For more mainstream exercise fitness you can visit my friends site.
What you eat is more important then counting calories. Yes, you do need to make sure you have a calorie deficiency to lose weight, and it takes a 3500 calorie deficiency to lose 1 lb of fat, in using yoga for weight loss you will have all the calorie burning power you need. However you will have the best results by making sure you have some calories from Carbohydrates before your workout (not a lot but some). It is really funny since we all know carbs turn into fat, but most of us do not know that the body cannot burn fat without carbs. There is a quote I like: Fat burns in a carbohydrate flame. Remember it. Also vegetables, fruits and fish are best to eat during fat loss. You can still eat red meat, but try to cut back on it if you can… fish and beans can give you the protein you need. When using yoga for weight loss, you should also think about your diet, you can see my page on yoga diets for more information. Remember the main thing is a calorie deficiency to lose weight… But maintain the calories you need for life, for most of us that is about 2,000 Calories a day.
DO it with a friend. Having someone to keep you motivated really helps and having some friendly competition will keep you honest outside the gym during the day, when you need to watch what and how much you are eating. Also with two people using yoga for weight loss, if becomes more fun.
People say dieting does not work, and they are right. To lose weight and keep it off you need a healthy lifestyle. Your diet is part of that, just remember your diet is what you eat and it is not stopping eating.
A key thing to remember is that natural weight loss is very important. All the artificial products out there are not good for you, almost every weight loss drug has undesirable side effects. Do it naturally and there are no side effects. All you need is Nature, knowledge and you.
How a yogi would lose the weight if a yogi needed too.
How would a yogi use yoga for weight loss? He would do it with a healthy lifestyle of course and by listening to his body. This includes a number of things.
Here are some of the topics that would be thought of.
Yoga conditioning for weight loss
Yoga and your diet
Research on what supplement can speed up your weight loss.
Internal body cleansing
Another thing to add to your Yoga for weight loss program would be of course weight loss through ayurveda - Stay thin with a slender waist. Ayurveda is a perfect ancient science of life; the word AYUR literally means life and VEDA the science or knowledge. Ayurveda briefly explains the knowledge of the do’s and don’ts one has to follow, which favors the well being of each individual to lead a healthy, happy, comfortable and advantageous life physically, mentally & socially. Ayurveda also emphasizes “prevention is better than cure”.

5 Tips to Quickly Increase Your Metabolism

The best way to lose weight is to increase your metabolism. Your metabolism manages how fast and effectively you expend energy and process food. The higher your metabolism, the more efficiently your body burns calories and the faster your lose weight. Although many factors that affect your metabolic rate, such as age and genetics, are out of your control, there are simple steps you can take to give your metabolism a much needed boost.

1. Eat Well

Eating a well balanced diet of protein, grains, fruits and vegetables is the easiest way to jump-start your metabolism. Consuming healthy foods gives your body the fuel it needs to function properly. You expend a lot of calories digesting and breaking down proteins and complex carbohydrates, which in turn speeds up your metabolism. These foods also aid the formation and development of lean muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the faster you burn calories.

2. Eat Small Meals

Instead of eating the traditional three meals a day, try eating five or six smaller meals. Make sure your mini-meals include a portion of some protein and a side of fruit or vegetables. By eating every 3 or 4 hours, you're giving your body a constant supply of food to digest. This helps keep your metabolism going throughout the day.

3. Stay Hydrated

Your body is like an intricate machine and your metabolism is one of its many functions. It needs plenty of water to run at its optimal level. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water every day will keep your metabolic rate up and will help you shed the pounds. Also, studies indicate that drinking cold water, in particular, can temporarily increase your metabolism. Your body needs to exert energy in order to warm the liquid, and this causes a spike in your metabolism.

4. Start a Weight Training Program

Muscle burns more calories than fat. A great way to build muscle and increase your metabolism is to incorporate weight training into your exercise regime. Weight training helps you build muscle by breaking the fiber of existing muscles. In order to rebuild and strengthen those muscles, you have to use up a lot of calories. This in turn boosts your metabolism. Supplement your weight training program with some cardio and the pounds will melt away.

5. Get Plenty of Sleep

A good night's sleep is an essential part to any weight loss program. As you sleep, your body releases melatonin and other growth hormones that help to repair damaged muscle fiber and strengthen your metabolism. If you don't get enough rest, your body's metabolic functions don't work as well as they should. As a result, you can not process carbohydrates as well and your unused energy is stored as fat. Sleep deprivation also leads to the release of a hormone called cortisol which increases your appetite and makes it more difficult for you to lose weight. Therefore, it's important to catch your Z's. Doctors recommend between 7 and 9 hours for the average adult.
By making these small adjustments, you will not only experience a boost in your metabolism, you'll also experience an improvement in your overall health and physical fitness.

Antioxidants: The 13 Healthiest Foods

In her just-released book,The O2 Diet,weight-loss expert and WH contributor Keri Glassman, R.D., reveals the powerful benefits of eating foods that are packed with antioxidants.
When it comes to eating healthy and losing weight, we've been focusing on the wrong set of numbers, says nutritionist Keri Glassman, R.D. This month, Glassman launches a revolutionary way of eating in her new book,The O2 Diet, which is based on the foods that have the highest antioxidant activity levels. This plan will make it super-simple for you to shed pounds, look fabulous, boost your energy, and amp up your brainpower.
Glassman's plan is based on the ORAC scale—a scientific value that represents the antioxidant levels of foods. (ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity.) Using this scale, she has devised a diet that gets you 30,000 ORAC points a day—10 times the current recommended level of 3,000. It's those mega ORAC points that scoop up free radicals, the damaging rogue elements in our bodies that contribute to everything from wrinkles and brain fog to cancer and heart disease.
And you can say good-bye to calorie counting: By focusing on high ORAC scores, you'll chow down on foods that are healthy and have the right proportion of nutrients, so the extra weight will come off more easily.
In her book, Glassman explains how certain high-ORAC fruits and vegetables have specific powers. Load up on these antioxidant superstars every time you hit the grocery store—they'll help you bring out your healthy best in these five ways.
1 LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT TRYING
On the O2 Diet, estimate that you'll lose about two to three pounds a week. But instead of worrying about the pounds, focus on ORAC points—and the pounds will melt away. These are just three of the O2 Diet's weight-loss wonders:
ARTICHOKES: At only 60 calories each, they're a calorie bargain. Artichokes are also super-high on the ORAC scale—7,900 points—and they contain phytochemicals that may lower cholesterol levels.
LEMON WATER: Lemon peel contains pectin, a soluble fiber that has been shown to help with weight loss. Add an ounce of lemon juice and some zest to each of your eight daily glasses of water (which will help you feel fuller), and you'll add 3,200 ORAC points.
RED GRAPEFRUIT: One study found that people who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds over 12 weeks, while those who drank grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds. The red variety has more of the cancer-protecting antioxidant lycopene. Half a grape-fruit has 1,900 ORAC points.
2 MAKE YOUR SKIN GLOW
While no food can turn back the clock, some can perk up your looks and slow the aging process.
FIGS: Eating a handful of dried figs increases the amount of antioxidants in your blood for four hours, much longer than many other foods. Two small figs have about 2,700 ORAC points.
RED BELL PEPPERS: The unique combination of large amounts of vitamins A, C, and E make red bell peppers a skin superfood. Half a cup adds 600 ORAC points.
WATERMELON: This lycopene-rich fruit provides 33 percent more protection against sunburn than other fruits. (You still have to wear sunscreen though!) One cup of this diced melon has 200 ORAC points.
3 BOLSTER YOUR  BODY
Certain antioxidants have been shown to fight cancer, boost immunity, and keep bones strong.
BEANS: They're loaded with phytochemicals (including saponins, protease inhibitors, and phytic acid), which may protect cells from damage that potentially causes cancer, reports the American Institute for Cancer Research. Half a cup has 7,800 ORAC points.
PRUNES: These wrinkly little dried fruits are rich in vitamin K and a top source of the mineral boron, and we need both for strong bones. A three-prune serving gives you 1,900 ORAC points.
4 WARD OFF HEART DISEASE
Young women tend to be oblivious to heart disease, but that attitude itself is a big risk. How you eat today helps predict how healthy your heart will be 30 years from now.
CHERRIES: Researchers at the University of Michigan have found that the anthocyanins in dark cherries reduce belly fat and lower cholesterol and blood sugar; one serving packs 3,500 ORAC points.
DARK CHOCOLATE: Rich in flavonoids, chocolate is believed to promote heart health by reducing platelet activation, affecting the relaxation capabilities of blood vessels. One ounce of dark chocolate has 5,900 ORAC points.
5 BOOST YOUR BRAINPOWER
The neural pathways in our brains are growing and improving all the time. Eat the right foods and you'll be able to concentrate better, remember more, and feel calmer.
BLUEBERRIES: They may improve memory, cognition, and balance. Researchers believe that blueberries (9,700 ORAC points per one-cup serving) reduce inflammation and can help us overcome the normal effects of brain aging.
CINNAMON: Researchers believe that cinnamon may inhibit certain Alzheimer's disease cells. One teaspoon of cinnamon adds 7,000 ORAC points.
PLUMS: These juicy treats decrease anxiety-related behaviors, and researchers think they may protect against depression. One plum adds 4,100 ORAC points to a meal.

12 Reasons You’re Not Losing Fat

1) You’re Eating Toabs purple 12 Reasons Youre Not Losing Fato Many Carbs

This should be pretty obvious to most people by now, but there are still the old die-hards out there who swear that everyone should be consuming two grams of carbs per pound of bodyweight every day while maintaining a low fat intake.
Load up on whole grains and fruit while cutting down on healthy, essential sources of fat like grass fed beef they’ll tell you.
Anyone experienced in physique transformation knows this is nonsense.
Most average people have a terrible tolerance for carbs, shitty insulin sensitivity and simply don’t do enough physically demanding work to warrant too many carbs.
If you want to get lean cutting carbs is usually one of the first and most important steps you need to take. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t or can’t have any but you need to make smart choices and they need to be taken in at the right times and cycled properly.
The more training you do and the leaner you are the more carbs you can tolerate. If you have a lot of fat to lose, however, cutting them would be a very important first step to take.

2) You’re Eating Carbs at the Wrong Time

If you’re above 15% bodyfat you need to limit carbs somewhat. In that case I would only recommend a serving or two of fruit each day, vegetables and 50-100 grams of starchy carbs from potatoes or rice with your nightly meal or post workout. Another option is to go three days with no starchy carbs then load up on day four. When you get down to 15% you can increase the amount of carbs at dinner or in your refeed day.
Everyone else should limit carb consumption to post workout and night time, as per The Renegade Diet rules rules. During the day you want to be alert and focused, which is one reason why you don’t want to be pounding down starchy carbs during this time. Save for them for the night time when you want to optimize serotonin production and rest, relax and repair.

3) You’re Eating Too Much Fat

Some people cut carbs and assume that they’re good to go and there’s nothing else to worry about. Unfortunately, the low/no carb diet isn’t as much fun as Dr. Atkins made it out to be.
You can’t just eat pounds of bacon and mayonnaise with reckless abandon and think that you’ll magically end up ripped.
Fat contains calories; nine per gram to be exact. At the end of the day total calories still matter, and if you’re eating more than you burn you’re never going to get ripped.
Please don’t mistake this as my advocating a low fat diet. That’s just as bad, if not worse, than eating too much fat.
A minimum of 20% of your calories should come from healthy fats like pastured egg yolks, wild caught salmon, grass fed beef and coconut oil to ensure optimal health. Just be careful about going overboard with it and thinking that low carbs automatically leads to single digit body-fat.
You still need to keep a handle on things like total calories.

4)You’re Not Eating Enough Protein

protein food 300x203 12 Reasons Youre Not Losing FatIn my experience it’s usually only females who are guilty of this but guys can make this mistake on occasion as well. The average female who can’t lose body-fat usually eats a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast with an egg.
One… single… egg.
Then she’ll have a sandwich for lunch with two ounces of lean turkey.
For dinner it will be a salad with low fat dressing and four ounces of chicken or fish.
Although, in all honesty they may skip the protein all together and just have a salad for either lunch or dinner. Let’s assume she weighs 135 pounds. Most experts would agree that she would need to consume at least 100 grams of protein per day, if not a gram per pound, which would equal 135 grams.
Each ounce of protein is around 6-7 grams of protein. So in this example she had 36-40 or so grams combined with lunch and dinner plus the six grams from the egg. So that’s a total of 42 grams, which falls just a wee bit shy of where she needs to be.
Females often freak out when you tell them to eat more than six ounces of protein at a sitting but when you break down the numbers for them and reveal just how many calories they’re eating it should make more sense.
People who eat a sufficient amount of protein usually end up having an easier time getting ripped than those who don’t. Make sure you’re getting enough.

5) You’re Drinking Too Many Protein Shakes

When you want to get ripped it’s always better to chew as many of your calories as possible. The very act of chewing and digesting solid food burns more calories than drinking shakes does. Most physique competitors cut out shakes when getting ready for a show. Take note and learn the lesson. One after a workout is okay but I wouldn’t be slugging down three a day.

6) You’re Eating Nuts

I love nuts. I mean, who doesn’t? Give me a bag of pistachios or cashews and I won’t look up till the whole thing’s gone.
The problem is nuts have a ton of calories. When you’re dieting for fat loss the rules are usually the opposite of those followed by skinny hardgainers trying to gain size.
Those guys want the most calorically dense foods possible. Fat loss dieters do not.
You’re better off filling up on nutritionally dense foods that don’t pack a lot of calories, like green vegetables. If you’re dieting you need to limit your nut consumption to about ten almonds per serving.
Not too many people can eat ten almonds. Most people eat ten handfuls. If you are strictly tracking and calculating everything all day and you want to load up on nuts at certain times I suppose you could but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Nuts can be very problematic for a lot of people, especially those with digestive or auto immune issues. As Paleo Solution author Robb Wolf has noted, nuts should be used the same way you use condiments- sparingly.
I should also add, and this is strictly my opinion, meaning it has NOT been proven and posted on Pubmed… nut butters seem to be easier for most people to digest than actual whole nuts. Just something to consider.

7) You’re Eating Too Much Fruit

jolie berry 300x224 12 Reasons Youre Not Losing Fat“What?! You’re telling people not to eat fruit!? Everyone knows that it’s impossible to get fat from eating too much fruit!”
Yeah, yeah I know, that’s why physique competitors eat so much fruit and why all fat loss experts who specialize in getting people shredded recommend such high quantities of it.
In our hunter gatherer days fruit was nothing like what you see in the supermarket today. Berries were small, dark and bitter; not the huge sugar sacks most people consume these days.
Don’t get me wrong, fruit is healthy and can be eaten by lean individuals in limited amounts but any type of excessive fructose (a sugar found in fruit) consumption will lead to fat gain.
Fructose can only be processed by the liver and once liver glycogen stores are full the excess gets converted to triglycerides and stored as body-fat. If you want to get ripped cut fruit completely for a while or limit it to two or three servings per day. Just be sure to really up the vegetable consumption so you can keep your vital nutrient uptake where it needs to be.

8) You’re Not Training Heavy

When you want to lose body-fat the first inclination is often to crank up the reps and cut the rest periods. I actually have no problem with fairly low rest periods.
But not if you’re used to resting three minutes between sets and all of the sudden cut them down to thirty seconds because you decided it was time to get shredded you’ll be in trouble.
That never works. All that happens is your weights start plummeting on every exercise and you get weaker and smaller. High reps have the same effect.
When dieting, the primary role of strength training is to maintain muscle mass.
That is the single most important thing. Don’t use it as your primary “fat burning” activity… UNLESS you are seriously overweight. If you need to lose more than fifty pounds or so that would probably be fine (although please don’t ever do any of the bullshit you see on those fat camp TV shows).
A female can actually get something out of metcon workouts in the right situation as well. The caveat, however, is that that she needs to be strong and actually have some muscle mass. If you take a weak female with no muscle and give her a silly metcon circuit she won’t usually get much out of it because she’s too weak to produce enough force.
Females should get strong first before they attempt that type of training.
If you’re a guy and are trying to lose 10-20 pounds of body-fat without losing all your muscle mass in the process you should use strength training as a way to maintain size and strength; nothing more, nothing less. So the same principles that helped you get big and strong apply when dieting. Keep the reps in the low to moderate range and the resistance high.

9) You’re Overdoing Cardio

Traditional forms of cardio are largely useless for fat loss.
But useless is even okay, it’s when it starts to be counterproductive that we have a real problem. Excessive amounts of cardio lead to an overproduction of cortisol which leads to more abdominal fat and numerous health problems. If you want to do cardio that won’t actually hurt you and could do you some good, go for a long walk.
No self respecting man should ever be spotted on an elliptical machine.
dog sled chan 12 Reasons Youre Not Losing Fat
Sled work builds muscle, burns fat and is irreplaceable

10) You’re Not Running Sprints or Doing Sled Work

Dieting is the most important thing for fat loss.
After that you should be doing some form of strength training to maintain your muscle mass. When you have those to things dialed in you’ll want to add in some type of sprinting or sled work. There is nothing more effective for fat loss.
See all wide receivers, defensive backs, sprinters, soccer players, etc. for proof. Two or three 20-40 minute sprint or sled sessions per week will be enough for most people.

11) You’re Not Managing Stress Properly

When you get stressed out your body produces a hormone known as cortisol. This increases bodyfat storage if it’s not controlled. Most people are stressed out all day long which means their cortisol levels are always high. That leads to an increase in bodyfat even if your diet and training are perfect. So make sure to take the time to de-stress, mediate, laugh, do something fun and try not to take things so seriously. Stress management is overlooked key in fat loss.

12) You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep

When you’re short on sleep your insulin sensitivity decreases and your cortisol goes up. Both things lead to less than optimal fat loss.
You also miss out on the critically important Growth Hormone boost that comes each night during deep sleep. If you want to lose more fat you have to get more sleep. Most people will ignore this and some of you are probably reading this at 2am. Unfortunately this just might be the most important thing on the whole list.
More sleep improves EVERYTHING. Make it a priority.

5 REASONS YOU MIGHT NOT BE LOSING WEIGHT, HIGH-PROTEIN BREAKFASTS, AND MORE

Nothing taps your panic button quite like gaining weight, especially when you're on a weight loss program. Unfortunately, it's an inevitable fact of life. Luckily, you've got me here to tell you that, as long as you're following a solid program, results will come. It's a physiological certainty (unless you have an underlying issue, like hypothyroidism).
I realize this might take further convincing, considering our instant-gratification society. But this ain't my first weight loss rodeo. I've seen almost every scenario you can dream up, most of which were solved by patience. That said, there are some strategies you can use to ensure you're getting the most out of both your diet and exercise program. Let's tackle five of the most common weight loss conundrums.
Woman on Scale

  1. I'm following the program perfectly. Why isn't it working?! Cortisol is a word you should become familiar with, as it's a key factor here. You've probably heard that it makes you fat, but you have no idea why "they" say that. What is cortisol? It's actually a performance-enhancing stress hormone that serves an important function in survival situations. Unfortunately, when we force too much daily stress on our bodies, we shift into a state of chronic cortisol release. This can cause us to store excess fat as a survival instinct. While it sounds pretty dire, it's generally only a serious problem in those with poor lifestyle habits.

The beginning of a diet and/or exercise program, however, is a survival situation. In a very simplistic sense, your body releases cortisol, which, in turn, causes excess water retention to help you rebuild broken down muscle tissue. While this is cortisol functioning properly, it does lead to a period of water weight gain as you adjust to a new program. It's nothing to worry about. By following a solid plan, your body will adapt by repairing this muscle tissue. This results in an increase in your metabolism and leads to weight loss if that's your goal.

The trick is that there is no hard line on how long this adaptation takes. It's based on your individual parameters. Just rest easy in the fact that it will happen, unless you force it not to, leading us to . . .
  2. Woman with Small PortionI'm barely eating. Severe undereating causes cortisol release, as it's the definition of a bodily emergency. Beachbody® offers many kick-start (or express) eating plans where you undereat for a few days, but you're always encouraged to get back to a solid maintenance calorie level quickly. A short period of strategic undereating with proper hydration will help your body dispense of unneeded food (most of us chronically overeat) and regulate bodily functions. Go too long, however, and chronic cortisol release is the result.

This is a tough situation because our natural reaction to weight gain is to eat less. When you're exercising, it's important to keep your eye on workout performance, as opposed to how much weight you're losing. You should be eating enough so that your daily workouts improve over time. As long as that's happening, your body is adapting, your metabolism is increasing, and you will lose weight provided you also don't overeat.
  3. I've been doing hard workouts for weeks. On the performance theme, you need to continually improve, which is why workouts get harder as you move through any of Beachbody's programs. It's also why we add resistance (via added weight or gravity, as is the case with jumping) to workouts. If you're doing the same workouts at the same intensity constantly, you are not forcing adaptations that lead to changes in your metabolism. This is called a plateau.

A plateau, technically, isn't gaining weight—it's remaining the same—but a proper diet and exercise program should continually force improvements (in the form of adaptations). Otherwise, your metabolism won't continue to increase, which is the goal of most weight loss programs.
  4. My friend and I are doing the exact same thing and she's losing. Back to adaptation. We all react differently. The only absolute is that our bodies will change over time with a healthy program. A fitness rule called the Specificity of Adaptation states that it takes the body between 3 and 12 weeks to adapt to new stimuli, which is a very broad range. This is why it's vital that you stick to your program and not change it repeatedly based on your daily results!

In our test groups, two-week results have almost no bearing on who does best in the end. In fact, many people that undereat early and get off to a fast start will stagnate, while those who stick to the plan and eat as advised will start slower but train harder over time, leading to rapid weight loss as the program wears on.
  5. Woman with Small PortionI lost weight for a while but now it's stopped. For ages on the Team Beachbody® Message Boards, this was our most frequently asked question. You eat less to lose weight. Things are going great, but suddenly you plateau—or start gaining. Odds are, your metabolism has slowed down in order to deal with the decreased calories. You're starving your now fit body, so it's doing what it needs to do to survive. The answer to this problem is pretty simple: eat more.

Again, this is a tough sell, so here's an example. One of our early Success Stories lost 40 pounds during a round of Power 90®, eating only 1,200 calories a day. He then stagnated for a long time and was very resistant to eating more, fearing it would kick-start a regression. We talked him into adding calories until, finally at around 2,000 calories, weight loss resumed. It then became so rapid he dropped through his goal, and about 20 pounds below, until finally, at around 3,000 calories, he leveled out. Then a daily diet of around 3,500 calories a day got him to a ripped 175.
So the moral of today's lesson is to trust your exercise program—at least if it's a Beachbody program. We've been doing this a long time and we know what works. There are no magic bullets. Body transformation is based on making consistent, healthy lifestyle changes. Do that and you'll never need to ask yourself why you're gaining weight again.

BENEFITS OF CAYENNE PEPPER FOR WEIGHT LOSS

SUPPRESSES APPETITE

One of the keys to success in any weight-loss program is reducing your intake of food, particularly foods with high-caloric values. In "The Perricone Weight-Loss Diet," author Nicholas Perricone, M.D., cites studies by a Japanese-Canadian research team that show capsaicin tends to lower caloric intake. One of the studies, published in 2004, indicates that it takes a hefty dose of the fiery spice to achieve its appetite-suppressant effects. However, in a bit of good news for those who aren't too fond of spicy foods, the research team found that the spice's ability to reduce appetite is equally effective whether ingested in food or taken in capsule form, according to Perricone.

Danish researchers looked at a weight-loss supplement that combined 450 mg of cayenne, containing 1.2 mg of capsaicin, with 1,500 mg of green-tea extract, 1,218 mg of L-tyrosine, 302 mg of caffeine and 3,890 mg of calcium carbonate. In findings published in the February 2007 issue of the International Journal of Obesity, they report the supplement significantly increased thermogenesis, or the rate at which the body burns off fat calories. In their evaluation of capsaicin's specific properties, they note that the spice not only increases fat oxidation, but also ramps up energy expenditure and stimulates activity by the sympathetic nervous system, both of which help the body to shed excess pounds.

INCREASES METABOLIC RATE

Botanist James A. Duke, Ph.D., author of "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook," identifies capsaicin as one of a handful of natural substances that can be helpful in losing weight. As evidence of its effectiveness, Duke cites a study that was conducted at Oxford Polytechnic Institute in England. Test subjects were fed a standard diet for a period of time, after which their metabolic rates were measured. Researchers then added a teaspoon of red pepper sauce, high in capsaicin, and a teaspoon of mustard to every meal ingested by the test subjects. At the conclusion of the study period, metabolic rates in the group receiving the capsaicin and mustard were as much as 25 percent higher. Duke points out that there is an additional benefit to using capsaicin administered in food during a weight-reduction program. The hot substance increases thirst, which, if quenched with water, helps to fill the stomach, thus reducing overall food intake.

Five Kitchen Spices That Rev Up Weight-Loss

There’s no magic bullet to losing weight. But these five spices not only add flavor to your meals. They help you where you need it most to lose weight…
They break down fat, speed up metabolism, control blood sugar and cravings, reduce inflammation, and increase digestion.
Best of all, they are safe, cheap, and easily accessible. And they make meals delicious.
Your weight-loss spice all-stars…
Black Pepper - This common table spice lowers fat levels in the bloodstream.1 Mice that ate a high-fat, high-sugar dietwith black pepper had a decrease in visceral fat. And even better… the more black pepper they ate, the more body weight and visceral fat they lost. Visceral fat is the worst kind. It lies deep within your abdomen and surrounds organs. Too much leads to heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, and many more unwanted health conditions.
The pepper triggers a metabolic reaction that breaks down fat cells. The active compound in black pepper is called piperine. It’s an alkaloid that gives black pepper its pungent taste. And its fat blocking properties.
Red Pepper - Bring on the fresh salsa… but only if it’s the hot stuff. Adding just a half teaspoon of this spice to foods can help cut 70 calories from meals.2 It can also help decrease cravings for fatty, salty, and sweet foods.
Red pepper contains the compound capsaicin. It’s what gives peppers their “heat.” Capsaicin ups core body temperature, which then helps the body burn calories. Spicy foods can increase metabolism by about 20 percent for 30 minutes.3
You can take red pepper supplements. But researchers at Purdue University discovered that just eating the pepper might the best way to go. In a recent study they added the spice directly to the participants’ meals.
“That burn in your mouth is responsible for that effect,” said study author Richard Mattes. “It turns out you get a more robust effect if you include the sensory part because the burn contributes to a rise in body temperature, energy expenditure, and appetite control.”
Cinnamon – This aromatic spice does more than just sweeten your dishes. It actually revs up your metabolism. It processes carbs quicker due to its ability to stabilize insulin levels. And by doing this it prevents the body from storing extra fat. Research shows that cinnamon can actually mimic insulin.
“It stimulates insulin receptors on fat cells in the same way that insulin does, allowing excess sugar to move out of the blood and into the cells,” said Dr. Harry Preuss of Georgetown Medical Center.
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that just three grams of cinnamon increases the levels of a peptide that helps delay the emptying of the stomach.  And if you have a full stomach you are more likely to eat less.
Mustard Seed - One of the most popular spices traded in the world, mustard seed is a great source of selenium, manganese, and omega-3. All of which help fight inflammation.  A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition studied nine years of data on over 1,200 people and found chronic inflammation was a culprit to weight gain. Inflammation stores extra fat, especially visceral fat. So if you reduce inflammation, you reduce fat.
Mustard seed also packs a bit of heat, adding to its weight-loss properties. One teaspoon of the spice can speed up your metabolic rate by almost 25 percent. That can mean burning an extra 45 calories in one sitting.
Ginger - Also an anti-inflammatory, but best known for its gastrointestinal properties, ginger helps speed up the digestive process. It eliminates food and waste, preventing buildup. Researchers at the Institute for Human Nutrition at Columbia University discovered that adding a hot ginger beverage –two grams of ginger powder dissolved in hot water – helped create satiety. People felt fuller sooner and ate less later on. Ginger increases core body temperature, which also helps burn calories. A win-win when trying to lose weight.
These spices not only boost your weight loss efforts, they boost the flavor of your meals. There’s no easy fix when it comes to weight loss but these spices will give your metabolism the kick-start it needs. And best of all, no counting calories, no fad diets, and no chalky-tasting weight loss shakes. Just a delicious meal packed with health benefits.

6 Weight Loss Power Vegetables

1. ALFALFA SPROUTS

I love alfalfa sprouts because they can easily be added to any sandwich or salad or even soup. You can also grow them at home, which is cheaper, more convenient, and they harvest in only seven days.
These sprouts contain an impressive amount of nutrients that include calcium, folic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. They also include a full range of vitamins A, B complex (even B12), C, E and K, and can be a source of chlorophyll.
Alfalfa sprouts reduce inflammation, which make them helpful for people with arthritis or any other inflammatory disease. They also help lower blood pressure and boost the immune system by increasing the activity of our natural killer cells.

2. WATERCRESS

Watercress adds a burst of freshness and flavor to any dish. I like to add it to my eggs and salads. Watercress has many disease-prevention properties, particularly for Alzheimer's and osteoporosis. This is because of its high calcium and vitamin K content, which is important for bone formation and strengthening, as well as limiting neurological damage in the brain.
Watercress is also high in beta carotene and vitamin C, making it a powerful antioxidant and important for immune system support while the potassium in watercress works to control heart rate and blood pressure by reducing the effects of sodium in our diet.

3. CUCUMBERS

Who doesn't like cucumbers? This popular vegetable is most commonly used in salads, but I like eating them raw with some lime juice. Cucumbers are amazing for skin health. You've probably seen them covering people's eyes at a spa during a facial treatment. This is because they help relieve puffiness and darkness around the eyes. In addition, they help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling, while providing the hydration needed for bright and glowing skin.
Cucumbers are also a great source of silica, which is a mineral used to strengthen the connective tissue that makes up our skin. Other nutrients include vitamins A, C, folic acid, magnesium, and potassium. They are also high in fiber, which further supports weight loss and intestinal health.

4. BOK CHOY

I use bok choy in any stir fry or sometimes I just eat it raw. This vegetable has been associated with cancer prevention, particularly lung, colon, prostate and endometrial cancers. This is because it contains compounds called glucosinolates, which help fight cancer.
Bok choy is also high in carotenoids, which support our eye health by preventing cataracts and age-related muscular degeneration. Its potassium content lowers high blood pressure and its low glycemic index helps treat and prevent diabetes.

5. TURNIP GREENS

Steaming is the best way to preserve nutrition and enjoy the flavor from these vegetables. Turnip greens strongly support our cardiovascular system, protecting against heart attack, heart disease, and atherosclerosis. They are an excellent source of folate, which plays a key role in cardiovascular health.
Turnip greens lower cholesterol and have an anti-inflammatory effect in addition to being strong antioxidants, lowering the risk of oxidative stress in our cells and aiding in detoxification.

6. SPINACH

Popeye had this one right. Not only does spinach help strengthen our muscles, it also helps our eyesight, stabilizes our blood pressure, protects our skin, and benefits our neurological health. The nutrients in spinach include potassium, manganese, zinc, magnesium, iron, and calcium. It tastes great either raw or cooked.
The vitamin K content in spinach is essential to bone health because it prevents excessive activation of osteoclasts (cells that break down bone).
And the best part about using these vegetables for weight loss is that they can taste great. Happy eating!
